A New Era in Sign Contracting

In Sign Industry Related on November 12, 2010 by flynnsigns Tagged: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Full service Sign Companies are licensed sign contractors. However, not many people, not even business owners, realize that sign companies are professional contractors. Yet, that is exactly what state-accredited sign companies are, contractors.

As most people take signs for granted, and because not much information is written on the subject, most people, including novice sign companies, do not realize the vast number of different sign types that are manufactured.

A small list:

1. Metal Extrusions
2. Custom Interior sign panels with layered acrylic, specialty paints, vinyl application
3. Custom Electrical Signs (not exposed neon signs)
4. ADA compliant types (with or without design features added)
5. Modular signs
6. Specialty signs (e.g., Fibreglass embedded graphics, etc.)
7. Engravable Signage

Note: the above mentioned may or may not include routing, flat cut out and layering, custom shapes with or without layering, and a host of other material design features not standard in the sign industry.

To learn more about custom and non-custom signage, contact Flynn Signs & Graphics, Inc. in Long Beach, CA. 1-800-458-2784.

Flynn Signs is a leader in design, manufacturing, and installation of signs in Southern California.

Once you learn about signs, you will never look at the world the same.

Big and Small Metal Letters

In Flynn Signs Information, Sign Related Information on January 18, 2011 by flynnsigns Tagged: , , , , , , ,

Metal is a generic term that classifies a category of malleable chemicals that are strong and durable. Steel, iron, aluminum, and alloys such as bronze and brass, are all metals. All of these materials are used to construct buildings, make cars, fabricate aircraft, ocean vessels and course, signs.

When people want a “metal sign”, they mean, they want an aluminum fabricated sign. Metal is the “catchall” term people use. Today, sign companies use the term, aluminum.

In the pastime of American signmaking, wood, ceramic, sheet metal, and plastic were the materials used to make signs. Nowadays, most of these materials have been phased out. However, since the technology has evolved, plastic is the main translucent material used to make signs. Plastics, such as acrylic, tuff glass, and Lexan are some of the main components of sign fabrication.

Right next to plastic is aluminum. Aluminum is the main metal component with fabricating signs. Aluminum does not rust like other metals. Aluminum is strong, light, and cost-effective. Overall, aluminum is the primary material used to make metal letters, channel letters and sign cabinets.

With letter signs, whether it is small metal letters or big metal letters, aluminum is the best metal for signs. There are some exceptions to making signs with aluminum. Brass, bronze and stainless steel fabricated letters are highly requested among sign buyers.

If you are going to buy metal letters, call Flynn Signs, we will help you. We have no minimum letter sign limit. You can order 1″ metal letters and 4″ metal letters. Our minimum order is $100 dollars.

The other popular letter sign people purchase are brushed metal letters and black metal letters. At Flynn Signs, we are experts at the material, thickness, finish, appearance and installation of letter signs.

Lastly, cast metal letters are generally made from aluminum, bronze and brass metals. Cast means the letter comes out of a form made in a metal foundry.

One of the other more popular types of letter signs is cut metal letters. Call us and ask us more about having mini metal letters done for your next project. Mini metal letters are done with the most advanced technology to date: waterjet cut and laser cut machinery.

Advertising Sign

In Flynn Signs Information, Sign Related Information on December 17, 2010 by flynnsigns Tagged: , , , , , , , ,

A business sign is also an advertising sign. Flynn Signs and Graphics creates specialized advertising signs. For a sign company, such as Flynn Signs, an advertising sign is actually called a company identification sign. Normally, a business name readily conveys what a company offers, a product or service. That is why an advertising sign made specifically for identifying a business is a store sign, or simply, a company sign.

Normally advertising design and marketing programs are made and developed by advertising and marketing companies. These creative-related businesses design for print and web medias, simple designs for a flat surface. In the sign industry, and with sign company personnel, a real signmaker must immediately know whether a design can be made into a sign simply by looking at it. It is the nature of sign company personnel to know and make 3-d creations for the real world.

Flynn Signs and Graphics has years of experience making designs into 3-d reality. We make signs that come to life. Sometimes, our signs are larger than life.

A channel letter business sign is an example of a sign that comes to life. Channel letter signs are probably the most common sign seen in society, next to road signs. (It should be noted that sign companies don’t consider road signs to be signs.). Most food market store signs are channel letter signs. A majority of retail store front signs are channel letter signs. Also called dimensional letters, channel letters are made to have depth. These signs, that is, channel letter signs are made of sheet metal or aluminum. Today, it is more common to have channel letters made from aluminum rather than sheet metal. In contrast to advertising, paper and vinyl do not have depth.

Illumination is the main feature of channel letters. Channel letters are fabricated to illuminated and therefore, light up at night. Most retail stores have illuminated channel letters on the front of the building and the side of the building.

Most people think that sign installation is easy. However, when it comes to electrical channel letter installation, nothing could be further from the truth. Installing channel letters requires experience and expertise. Ensuring a set of channel letters does not come off a building fascia is of paramount importance to a sign company. People are susceptible to severe injury if a 40 pound channel letter hits them. A sign cabinet that falls from a building could easily kill someone.

Our track record: Flynn Signs has 71 years in business without an accident.

Front store signs, channel letters or sign cabinets, are for retail business. The other commonly seen sign is a shop front signs, seen mostly in commercial centers and industrial parks. Most commercial and industrial businesses do not sell retail and are generally not illuminated. People in business tend to be a little bit more savvy than your average bear. The cost for illuminated signs for a business that does not do retail is not worth the expense. Therefore, commercial and industrial signs are usually non-illuminated dimensional letters, made of foam, or acrylic.

Marquee Signs Schools Letter Boards

In Flynn Signs Information, Sign Related Information on December 15, 2010 by flynnsigns Tagged: , , , , , , , , , ,

There are only two types of specific changeable letter boards. The main type is a letter board mounted on the wall with hinged doors. This letter board is approximately the size of a large TV. Letter boards of this type are purchased by churches, non-profit agencies, and inside various types of schools. They are used primarily to show daily, weekly, and monthly schedules. These type of letter boards are good for displaying activities which may change regularly. Letter boards are used as tenant directories in medium-sized and large office buildings. Most wall directories in office buildings have copy that is approximately one inch in height. But height visibility for tenant copy is not important since a viewer stands very close to the display of a wall directory.

The other letter board is considered a real sign, not only because it is used for outdoor use, but because of its large size. The main feature of this type of sign is the ability for the sign letters to be changeable. A changeable letter board enables this sign to display different words and phrases. For outdoor signs, letters must be larger since people view these type of signs from a distance. Without large letters displayed, a sign would not be effective. Six to eight inch letter height is the minimum size for an outdoor changeable letter board display. For better visibility, the average size letter is 8″ high. This letter board sign is aptly referred to as a changeable message sign. This type of letter board sign is used to convey static message. In the sign industry, the letter board sign is more aptly called a changeable letter sign. The main function of a letter board allows the user to change the characters. These type of signs are usually mounted onto a sign monument or a pole sign and has hinged doors for easy access. Changeable letter signs come in different sizes, large and small. Both indoor and outdoor letter board signs come with a changeable letter kit.

Marquee comes from the French term, marguise. The definition of marquee, according to the Free Dictionary on the Internet, is a rooflike structure, often bearing a signboard, projecting over an entrance, as to a theater or hotel. The signboards on these marquees were changeable marquee letters. Because we rarely see theater marquees today, the terms has shifted to mean something different. Nowadays, marquee signs are labeled for about a half dozen type of signs. The general public and business owners often call storefront and entrance signs a marquee sign. When a public or private school searches for a sign, they often refer to them as marquee signs schools, just like that.

Whatever term you use, marquee signs letters or marquee signs schools, Flynn Signs understands what people are looking for. We make it our goal to understand what the public needs in signage. Flynn Signs understands signs and the language of signs is our business, even if we have never heard of it before.

ADA Signs (American Disabilities Act)

In Flynn Signs Information, Sign Related Information on December 4, 2010 by flynnsigns Tagged: , , , , , , , ,

ADA is the abbreviation for American Disabilities Act.

ADA started in the United States decades ago. The shift towards awareness for people with disabilities began in 1973. This was only possible from the hard work of many people. ADA was officially recognized by the US Government in 1977. The US Congress began adding ADA guidelines into the mainstream of society in about 1988. All buildings with public access were required by law to be American Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant which is accomplished mostly by ADA signage.

The braille standard for ADA signage is compiled from research and set forth in guidelines by the United States Government. Education about braille is promoted through many non-profit organizations.

At Flynn Signs, we are experts with ADA signage.

When someone is referring to ADA signs, it means a sign with made with tactile graphics and grade 2 Braille. Tactile graphics simply means, the images and copy are raised. Copy is considered type. Grade 2 Braille is a standard of little semi-circular balls set in a pattern that people can read by touch. Tactile means preceptable by touch. Tactile graphics gives a blind person the assurance they are touching a sign with the ADA Braille system embedded.

The Braille System was invented by Louis Braille in 1821. Braille is used for blind people to read (and write) by touch, by feeling small little (physical) balls embedded into a substrate surface usually made of acrylic or photopolymer. The little balls, very small in size, perhaps less than 1/32″, are arranged in patterns that substitute words of phrases. Braille-assisted signs allow people who cannot see, the ability to move freely and independently, without the assistance of others.

The most common way for a blind person to locate an office, or other area in a building, like a restroom, can easily be identified by ADA office signs and ADA restroom signs. These signs have tactile graphics and braille embedded into them. ADA bathroom signs, in special housing facilities and centers for the disabled, are another example of signs with tactile graphics and braille. Flynn Signs handles ADA restroom signage requirements so you don’t have to.

Our company makes custom ADA signs and ADA compliant signs in colors, textures, embedded graphics, and finishes at the request of our customers. A customer is not limited to just plain signage. There are plenty of styles and configurations that may be utilized for ADA signs. If you have questions, Flynn Signs will help you answer any question regarding ADA compliant signage.

With new construction and refurbishing of old buildings, the need to upgrade parking has become an important consideration. Federal ADA regulations require all parking lots to have ADA compliant parking spaces with at least one space specifically to be van accessible. Each space designated ADA parking must have pre-approved striping on the pavement with an “International Symbol of Accessibility”, also called ISA symbol, painted in blue.

At Flynn Signs we understand ADA parking signage requirements. Call us to learn more.

Signs are more than signs in modern society. They are guideposts and a way of life.

Wayfinding Signage

In Flynn Signs Information, Sign Related Information on December 2, 2010 by flynnsigns Tagged: , , , , , , , , , ,

Wayfinding, defined by Wikipedia, is a method in which people orient themselves in an environment and move about from place to place.

Everyday, signs are the number one way in which people and drivers wayfind. Maps are also way in which people find their way around landscapes and cityscapes. But maps are limited. For some people, visual aids such as buildings, bridges, businesses, railroad tracks, among other things, are used for reference markers. Even these things have limitations. Nothing helps people find their way around more than signs. Every sign in society is used for wayfinding, and are used as informational signs, branding identification signs, instructional signs, and are used by everyone, even the blind. Interestingly, signs are mostly overlooked. However, they are the most important aspect of modern day wayfinding systems.

At Flynn Signs, we are wayfinding specialist. We use wayfinding as an integral part to the overall planning of sign systems.

In big cities, city wayfnding is critical since finding a place usually requires an address. A name of a place is very helpful, but not altogether necessary. Cityscapes are a cluster of sign systems with symbols and images everywhere, street signs, business signs, warning signs, branding signs, instructional signs, etc. At Flynn Signs we understand wayfinding since we have over 7 decades of experience with signs.

Within a dense metropolis, business identification signage is intentionally designed smaller (because of space limitations) and more colorful to attract attention. Signs for walking districts area called blade signs, flag signs, and may also be suspended from overheads, including wall mounted directories. Properly navigating one’s way through a big city requires well-designed wayfinding signage. City wayfinding solves the problem.

Urban wayfinding is closely related to city wayfinding. Urban wayfinding is for density. City wayfinding is for sprawl. Each type of wayfinding system is designed to assist a large amount of people move at a fast-pace in a large environment. Urban and city wayfinding are more concentrated on sign types designed for vehicles, whereas college wayfinding and airport wayfinding sign systems are for foot traffic.

Designing wayfinding systems requires thorough planning before wayfinding map system can move forward. Planning wayfinding signs for large moving populations requires the understanding of what a system needs.

Hospital wayfinding is one of the many different types of wayfinding systems which focuses on guiding people to their destination. Creating wayfinding hospital signs are difficult projects to undertake, for one, because there are so many different types of signs involved, and two, because a good portion require ADA compliance. ADA is American Disabilities Act. At Flynn Signs, we understand all sign regulations and issues related to sign compliance. Our company works to meet sign regulation requirements.

College wayfinding is another area which focuses heavily on pedestrian foot traffic. To create useful and effective signage for a college or university, first requires an on-site survey of the campus building layout before the first sign is designed.

At Flynnn Signs, our experience with campus and college wayfinding is extensive. We have worked on many school systems starting from the elementary level to the post-secondary education level.

Airport wayfinding is easily classified as a complex wayfinding system. Airport wayfinding involves heavy concentrations of pedestrian movement and requires very detailed wayfinding directionals. Airports are very complex and require extensive airport wayfinding sign systems unlike other systems in modern industrial societies.

Wayfinding is a system of signage that helps people make their way and find their destination which is achieved through well-designed signs. Without adequate wayfinding systems, there will be confusion.

Flynn Signs is an expert with practical wayfinding solutions.
